Harpists for live events and special occasions
What to expect from a professional harpist
A professional harpist adds an elegant, calm atmosphere to any event. The harp’s sound works well as background music during receptions, ceremonies and dinners, allowing conversation while still creating a refined musical backdrop. Most harpists offer a broad repertoire, from classical pieces and film music to pop arrangements and traditional songs, and can tailor their set list to match the tone of your event.
On the day, you can usually expect the harpist to arrive 45–60 minutes before the performance to set up, tune the instrument and coordinate with the organiser or venue staff. Performances are often structured in sets of 30–60 minutes, with short breaks in between.
Suitable occasions for a harpist
A harpist is suitable for many different types of events, for example:
- Wedding ceremonies, drinks receptions and wedding breakfasts
- Corporate receptions, award ceremonies and networking events
- Hotel, restaurant and afternoon tea entertainment
- Charity galas, product launches and exhibition openings
- Private parties, anniversaries and memorial services
Practical details for planners
Price range: Fees vary by experience, location and performance length, but many harpists charge from around £250–£350 for a short local booking, rising to £500–£800 or more for longer events, peak dates or extensive travel.
Space and access: A full-size concert harp requires a stable, flat area of approximately 2 × 2 metres. Easy access is important, as the instrument is heavy and moved on a trolley; stairs, gravel or long distances should be discussed in advance.
Power and equipment: Acoustic harps usually need no power. For larger rooms or guest numbers, the harpist may bring a small amplifier. Check if the venue can provide a standard power outlet and, if needed, a chair or armless piano stool.
Repertoire and special requests: Most harpists can learn a small number of special pieces, such as a wedding processional, if requested in good time before the event.
Contracts and logistics: Confirm start and finish times, breaks, dress code, parking, and any overtime rates in a written agreement or booking confirmation.
FAQ about hiring a harpist
How far in advance should I book?
For popular dates, especially weekends and wedding season, booking 6–12 months in advance is recommended. For midweek or off-season events, shorter notice is often possible.
How long can a harpist play?
Many harpists comfortably perform up to 3 × 45-minute sets with breaks. Longer coverage can sometimes be arranged with extended breaks or a varied programme.
Can I choose all the music?
You can usually select key pieces for moments such as a ceremony entrance or first song, and then indicate styles or genres you prefer for the rest of the event.
What if my event is outdoors?
Outdoor performances are often possible, but the harp must be protected from rain, direct sun and uneven ground. Always have a covered, sheltered area available as a backup.
