A professional saxophonist adds a sophisticated, modern touch to almost any event. From smooth background jazz to upbeat party anthems alongside a DJ, a live sax player creates atmosphere, fills awkward silences and gives guests a memorable focal point without overpowering conversation.
Performance style: Most saxophonists offer flexible sets, from mellow jazz and soul during arrivals or dinner to high-energy pop, dance and Ibiza-style house later in the evening. They can perform solo with high-quality backing tracks, with a DJ, or as part of a band.
Set length: A typical booking includes 2–3 x 40–45 minute sets across a 3–4 hour call time, with short breaks in between.
Professionalism: Expect punctual arrival, appropriate dress (smart, black tie or casual depending on your brief) and clear communication about timings, song choices and logistics.
Price range: Fees vary by experience, location and event length, but many saxophonists charge approximately £300–£900 / £250–£800 for a local event. Peak dates, travel and late finishes may increase the price.
Equipment: Most sax players can bring a small PA system suitable for background or medium-sized events. For larger venues or outdoor spaces, you may need a dedicated sound system and technician. When performing with a DJ, the DJ will usually handle sound, and the saxophonist connects via wireless microphone.
Space & power: Allow a small performance area (around 2m x 2m) with access to at least one standard power socket for amplification.
Repertoire: You can usually request a mix of jazz standards, soul, pop, house, R&B and lounge music. Most musicians will learn one or two special songs (for example a first dance) with advance notice.
Lead time: For popular dates (summer weekends and December), many planners book 6–12 months ahead. Midweek and off-season dates offer more flexibility.
Contracts & payment: Expect a simple agreement covering timings, fee, breaks, travel, overtime and cancellation terms, plus a deposit to secure the date.
Coordination: Share your schedule, dress code, guest profile and any “do-not-play” songs so the saxophonist can tailor the performance to your event.
Guideline: Aim for 6–12 months for key dates, and at least 2–3 months for smaller events, to secure your preferred saxophonist and style.
Yes, usually. Most sax players are experienced working with DJs and bands. Share your DJ’s details, set times and technical requirements so they can coordinate.
Usually not. For small to medium events, the saxophonist can often bring their own PA. For large stages or complex setups, your venue or AV supplier may provide sound.
To a large extent. You can request favourite genres and a few specific tracks. The musician will fill the rest of the set with songs that suit your brief and keep the flow of the event.
