ANGRY TOWN
Profile
Angry Town is a Polish-based band fronted by British singer-songwriter and guitarist Sam Jones. The band was formed in early 2017 in Gniewkowo, after Jones met the original members during one of his solo performances. Their first major performance saw them supporting the UK post-punk band The Membranes. Shortly after, they released their debut single, a cover of The Damned’s “New Rose.”
Angry Town is the only known example of a British frontman leading a new Polish-based band during the European Union years. The band has developed into both a live act and a studio project, offering Jones an opportunity to revisit his previous works as a songwriter while also exploring new creative directions.
Their sound blends energetic punk with melodic hooks and influences from 1990s grunge, blending styles to produce a stripped-down, aggressive-pop sound. The band’s visual style is influenced by 1960s–70s fashion, often compared to the café racer aesthetic. While often associated with punk, the band avoids being strictly labeled as such, initially describing themselves as ‘Mod-Punk’ to avoid genre stereotypes.
A key moment in the band's history came when they supported Koniec Świata at Lizard King in Toruń. The footage from this performance, just the band's third live show, was significant as it reflected their preparation and progress. This footage, now available on YouTube, serves as a milestone in the band’s career.
After performing live and recording between 2017 and 2018, Jones revived the band's name during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. He released two politically charged singles, each accompanied by a promotional video by Wojciech Budny. The band’s debut album, 'No Second Chance', was released as a limited edition CD in March 2023 through Camouflage Records, featuring both older and more recent recordings. The album title reflects the challenges and inflexibility Jones encountered while trying to reform the band and his observations while living in Poland. It was remastered and released digitally in October 2023.
As of April 2025, the band had reassembled with Adrian Mokwiński on bass and Jacek Leśniewski on drums. They chose to retire all songs from Angry Town’s previous live setlists and shift their focus entirely to new material. Their new set will feature fresh originals along with covers of New Order’s “Blue Monday,” along with songs by The Ramones, Status Quo, and The Kinks. Angry Town will join Healthy Junkies as a support act for one show during their tour of Poland in October, with a performance scheduled in Toruń. To mark the occasion, a new recording titled 'Child Of The Block' will be included on the remaining 150 copies of the 'No Second Chance' CD.
