Stax of Sax is the stage name for George Northall's solo saxophone act using high quality backing tracks.
George is a highly experienced sax player. He has played saxes and clarinet for nearly 60 years and was lead tenor in the very first Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra as well as being an alumnus of the world renowned NYJO (National Youth Jazz Orchestra). He studied clarinet at the George Clay School of Modern Music alongside Nick Pentelow (of Wizzard fame). Furthermore, he's at home in a multitude of genres, including classical, jazz, rock, funk, and soul.
He's played with a number of international soul artists, including Ben E King, Edwin Starr, and The Crystals. He has played alongside the jazz violinist, Jean Luc Ponty, Frank Zappa, the South African saxophonist Dudu Pakwana and Soweto Kinch as well as recording with a number of well-known artists, including Robert Plant's Band of Joy and with the producer, Danny Stimac who now writes for movies in Hollywood.
During his long musical career as a pro and semi-pro, George has appeared on British and German TV and radio and performed with numerous different bands as well as leading his own jazz group, No Mystery, which had a range of formats from a trio to an octet. He continues to play with a number of outfits, including a 1920s Jazz Orchestra and a rock/soul band, as well as depping with bands where they need a sax player. He has also performed with DJs.
